Art Installation
#sunflowerquiltforukraine
Janno's callout for sunflower squares to assemble a giant patchwork quilt, has been an outstanding show of love, kindness and support. More than 9.000 patches have been received from all around the world.
Our Ukrainian partners are calling our quilt The Road to Peace, and Janno calls it a metaphoric ‘hug for Ukraine.’
The quilt
Hand-sewn ’30cm x 30cm’ patches featuring the national flower of Ukraine along with messages of hope, peace and love, are continuing to be sent in from across Australia and the world, to Scone NSW. Inclusive to all communities,eg:- artists, makers, CWA, schools, support groups, disability sectors, First Nation peoples, galleries etc from extraordinary and ordinary people — to support the community project, described as a collective hug from the people of Australia and the world.
The art installation
THE ART INSTALLATION IS MADE IN PORTIONS THAT CAN BE LAID END TO END OR SIDE BY SIDE. SPANNING ALMOST 300- 400 METRES, BECOMES A VISUALLY POWERFUL AND STUNNING OPPORTUNITY TO DEMONSTRATE THE NATION’S SOLIDARITY WITH THE PEOPLE OF UKRAINE.
200 M OF FINISHED QUILT IS CURRENTLY IN LONDON, U.K.
Worldwide statement
The rapidly expanding quilt has received worldwide and Ukrainian media attention and was shown extensively in:
• London July- August, 2022, at culturally iconic landmarks: Albert Hall, Tate Modern, The Thames, Millennium Bridge, Hyde Park, Overlooking St Paul's Cathedral, The Ukraine
Embassy in UK, farmland, and No 10 Downing St on Ukrainian Independence day.
The completed quilt will be enormous, larger than a house, and made up of close to 9000 independent squares, a powerful collaboration and statement of hand stitched art ‘constructed making,’ that flies in the face of a war-torn ‘destructed’ landscape.
On July 27th, 200m of the quilt was flown to London and when it is complete, and safe to do so, will continue its journey to the embattled nation of Ukraine.
In Ukraine 400m x 2m will be laid down on roads, hung, draped and wrapped around broken buildings and bomb sites, in the tradition of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s large
scale environmental installations, a statement of comfort, beauty, hope and new beginnings. Our ‘quilt’ has already been held, worn, touched and displayed in recitals, dance, performance, prayer and silence, and will continue its healing journey into Ukraine.

Seeing the overwhelmingly positive response of #SunflowerQuiltForUkraine from Australia, the world, and Ukraine, it feels important to continue and make a bigger statement and extend our art installation for the children and brave and beautiful people of Ukraine.
We are still stitching… watch this space.
